O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar o efeito de reguladores de crescimento na germinação e na variação de alguns compostos em sementes de Carica papaya L. grupo "Formosa", extraídas de frutos nos estádios de maturação 3 e 5, correspondendo a 50 e 75% da casca com cor amarela, respectivamente. Avaliaram-se os efeitos do ácido 2-cloroetilfosfônico (CEPA), KNO3 e GA3 na germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, no conteúdo de açúcares solúveis, amido, lipídios, proteínas solúveis e totais das sementes. As sementes-controle obtidas de frutos no estádio 5 apresentaram maior germinação aos 30 dias após a semeadura em relação às do estádio 3. O CEPA promoveu diminuição na germinação das sementes, aparentemente, associado com a redução da mobilização de amido, sendo revertida com KNO3. O GA3, isoladamente e em associação com o KNO3, promoveu maior mobilização de lipídios. Em geral, com exceção do CEPA isoladamente, todos os reguladores de crescimento testados foram eficientes na superação da dormência. O KNO3 mostrou-se o composto mais eficiente em aumentar a germinação. Sementes do estádio 3 tratadas com KNO3 ou KNO3+GA3 apresentaram maior germinação aos 14 dias.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of growth regulators on germination rates and biochemical compound concentrations in Carica papaya L. seeds ('Formosa' group). The seeds were harvested from fruits at maturation stages 3 and 5 (50 and 75% yellow fruit skin, respectively). The effects of 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (CEPA), KNO3 and gibberellic acid (GA3) on seed germination, germination index speed, soluble sugars, starch, lipids, soluble proteins and total proteins of the papaya seeds were evaluated. The seeds from stage 5 showed a higher rate of germination 30 days after sowing than did the seeds from stage 3. Treatment with CEPA decreased seed germination, apparently due to decreased starch mobilization; the opposite response was observed following KNO3 treatment. GA3, alone or in combination with KNO3, stimulated an increase in lipid mobilization. In general, with the exception of CEPA, all growth regulators tested were effective in overcoming seed dormancy, and KNO3 was the most effective. The seeds from stage 3 fruits treated with KNO3 or KNO3 + GA3 had higher rates of germination at 14 days.

Dentre os micronutrientes, o Zn é um dos mais importantes para o cafeeiro, especialmente em solos argilosos e ácidos do sudeste brasileiro, onde seu cultivo é uma importante atividade econômica. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar a eficiência de uso do zinco por variedades de cafeeiro cultivadas em doses contrastantes do elemento. Mudas de 11 variedades foram cultivadas, em casa de vegetação, em solução nutritiva, com duas concentrações de zinco (0,0 e 6,0 µmol L-1). Após oito meses determinaram-se: biomassa seca dos órgãos da planta, concentração de zinco, eficiências de absorção, de produção de biomassa, de produção de biomassa foliar e de utilização de zinco. A concentração de zinco fornecida afetou todas as características avaliadas. A produção de biomassa seca de folhas apicais foi a mais afetada, proporcionando grande variabilidade de resposta entre as variedades. A variedade IPR-103 foi a mais eficiente no uso de zinco, as variedades San Ramon e São Bernardo as menos eficientes. A 'Rubi' apresentou alta e baixa eficiência de utilização de zinco quando cultivada nas doses 0,0 e 6,0 µmol L-1. A variedade Oeiras apresentou baixa eficiência de utilização na dose de 6,0 µmol L-1. As demais variedades estudadas foram moderadamente eficientes no uso do elemento.

Among micronutrients, zinc (Zn) is important for coffee tree cultivation, especially in the clayey acid soils of Brazil's southeast region, where coffee production is an important activity. This study aimed to evaluate the Zn use efficiency of coffee tree varieties using two zinc concentrations. Seedlings of 11 varieties of coffee trees were grown in a greenhouse in nutrient solution containing either 0.0 or 6.0 µmol L-1 of Zn. After eight months, we evaluated the total biomass production, leaf biomass production, concentration of Zn in the plant organs, absorption efficiency, and Zn use efficiency. All characteristics were affected by the Zn concentration. The biomass production of apical leaves was most affected by the Zn treatments, with high variability for the studied varieties. The 'IPR-103' variety had the highest Zn use efficiency, and the 'San Ramon' and 'San Bernardo' varieties had the lowest Zn use efficiency. The 'Rubi' variety had a high and low Zn use efficiency when grown at 0.0 and 6.0 µmol L-1 of zinc, respectively. The 'Oeiras' variety had a low Zn use efficiency when cultivated at 6.0 µmol L-1 of zinc. The other varieties studied were moderately efficient in their use of zinc.

Considerando o efeito positivo do silício (Si) na melhoria do desempenho fisiológico de várias espécies de plantas quando infectadas por patógenos, este trabalho teve como meta investigar o efeito desse elemento na capacidade fotossintética e no metabolismo antioxidativo de plantas dos cultivares de algodoeiro NuOpal e BRS Buriti, supridas ou não com Si, durante o processo infeccioso de Ramularia areola. A infecção por R. areola afetou negativamente a taxa líquida de fixação do CO2 (A), a condutância estomática (g s), a transpiração e a razão entre concentração interna e ambiente de CO2 nas plantas dos cultivares NuOpal e BRS Buriti não supridas com Si em relação às plantas supridas com esse elemento. Na presença do Si, houve aumento em A e g s além das concentrações de clorofila a, clorofila b e carotenóides nas plantas dos dois cultivares. A concentração foliar de Si aumentou, o que contribuiu para decrescer em 38% a área abaixo da curva do progresso da mancha de ramulária nas plantas supridas com Si, em relação às plantas não supridas com esse elemento. O fornecimento de Si às plantas de algodoeiro dos dois cultivares aumentou a atividade da dismutase do superóxido (SOD), da peroxidase do ascorbato (APX) e da lipoxigenase (LOX), mas houve redução na atividade da catalase (CAT) e na concentração de peróxido de hidrogênio (H2O2) e de aldeído malônico (MDA), houve ainda uma maior perda de eletrólitos. A atividade da glutationa redutase (GR) foi maior nas plantas do cultivar BRS Buriti supridas com Si, enquanto que nas plantas do cultivar NuOpal houve aumento da atividade da glutationa redutase apenas aos 21 dias após inoculação (dai). Conclui-se que a capacidade fotossintética e o sistema antioxidativo das plantas supridas com Si sofreram menor impacto durante o processo infeccioso de R. areola.

Considering the positive effect of silicon (Si) in improving the physiological performance of several plant species when infected by pathogens, this study investigated the effect of this element in the photosynthetic capacity and on the antioxidant metabolism of cotton plants from cultivars BRS NuOpal and Buriti, supplied or not with Si, during the infectious process of Ramularia areola. The infection by R. areola negatively affected the net carbon assimilation rate (A), stomatal conductance to water vapor (g s), internal-to-ambient CO2 concentration ratio and transpiration rate on plants of the two cultivars non-supplied with Si in comparison to plants supplied with this element. In the presence of Si, there was an increase in A and g s as well as on the concentrations of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoids in plants of both cultivars. The Si supply increased the foliar Si concentration, which contributed to decrease the area under ramularia leaf spot progress curve by 38% in comparison to plants non-supplied with this element. The Si supply to both cultivars increased the activities of superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase, but reduced catalase activity. The activity of glutathione reductase was higher on plants from cultivar BRS Buriti supplied with Si, while for the cultivar NuOpal the activity of glutathione reductase increased only after 21 days of inoculation (dai). There was reduction in the concentration of hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde until 15 dai and the electrolyte leakage was higher in plants supplied with Si in both cultivars. As compared to non-supplied plants, both cultivars presented increase on lipoxygenase activity when supplied with Si until 12 dai. It was concluded that the photosynthetic capacity and the antioxidative system of plants supplied with Si were less impacted during the infectious process of R. areola.

The shade leaves of coffee (Coffea arabica L.) apparently retain a robust photosynthetic machinery that is comparable to that of sun leaves and can fix CO2 at high rates when subjected to high light intensities. This raises the question of why the coffee plant would construct such a robust photosynthetic machinery despite the low photosynthetic rates achieved by the shade leaves at low light supply. Here, we grew coffee plants at 100% or 10% full sunlight and demonstrated that the shade leaves exhibited faster photosynthetic induction compared with their sun counterparts, in parallel with lower loss of induction states under dim light, and were well protected against short-term sudden increases in light supply (mimicking sunflecks). These findings were linked to similar photosynthetic capacities on a per mass basis (assessed under nonlimiting light), as well as similar extractable activities of some enzymes of the Calvin cycle, including Rubisco, when comparing the shade and sun leaves. On the one hand, these responses might represent an overinvestment of resources given the low photosynthetic rates of the shade leaves when light is limiting; on the other hand, such responses might be associated with a conservative behavior linked to the origin of the species as a shade-dwelling plant, allowing it to maximize the use of the energy from sunflecks and thus ultimately contributing to a positive carbon balance under conditions of intense shading.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar alterações fisiológicas e de tolerância à seca em clones de café Conilon (Coffea canephora) contrastantes quanto à sensibilidade ao deficit hídrico. Foram avaliadas as enxertias recíprocas entre os clones 109A, sensível ao deficit hídrico, e 120, tolerante - 120/109A, 120/120, 109A/120, 109A/109A -, além de seus respectivos pés-francos. As plantas foram cultivadas em vasos de 12 L em casa de vegetação. Após seis meses, metade das plantas foi submetida ao deficit hídrico por meio da suspensão da irrigação, até que as folhas atingissem o potencial hídrico de antemanhã de -3,0 MPa. Quando o clone 120 foi usado como porta-enxerto, as plantas apresentaram sistema radicular mais profundo, mas com menor massa, retardaram por mais tempo a desidratação celular das folhas e apresentaram maior eficiência no uso da água. Sob seca severa, os teores de amido e sacarose decresceram em todos os tratamentos, enquanto os teores de glicose, frutose, aminoácidos totais e prolina aumentaram, particularmente nos tratamentos 109A pé-franco, 109A/109A e 120/109A. Essas plantas apresentaram menor eficiência no uso da água. O acúmulo de solutos não foi associado à tolerância à seca. O uso de porta-enxertos tolerantes à seca contribui para a maior tolerância das plantas ao deficit hídrico.

The objective of this work was to determine alterations in physiology and those due to drought tolerance on Conilon coffee (Coffea canephora) contrasting clones regarding the sensitivity to hydric stress. The reciprocal grafting between clones 109A, drought sensitive, and 120, drought tolerant, - 120/109A, 120/120, 109A/120, 109A/109A - along with their ungrafted control plants (109A and 120) were evaluated. Plants were cultivated in 12-L vases in greenhouse. Six months after grafting, half of the plants was subjected to water deficit, by suspending irrigation until leaves reached the hydric potential of -3,0 MPa. When clone 120 was used as rootstock, plants presented deeper roots, although with lower root-biomass, higher ability to postpone leaf dehydration and higher instantaneous water-use efficiency (WUE). Under severe drought, starch and sucrose contents decreased similarly, regardless of the treatment, whereas leaf concentrations of glucose, fructose, total amino acids and proline were higher in non-grafted 109A, 109A/109A, and 120/109A plants. These plants showed the lowest WUE values. Solute accumulation was not primarily related to drought tolerance. The use of drought tolerant rootstocks improves to drought tolerance in coffee.

Nesta revisão, analisam-se brevemente algumas características (área foliar, arquitetura da copa, eficiência do uso da água e discriminação isotópica do carbono, relações hídricas e características radiculares) que podem ser exploradas em programas de melhoramento para tolerância à seca em cafeeiros arábica e robusta.

This paper briefly reviews some selected traits (leaf area, crown architecture, water-use efficiency and carbon isotope discrimination, water relations and root characteristics), which may be explored in breeding programmes to tolerance to drought stress in arabica and robusta coffee.
